Air Embolism Development after Lung Biopsy

Medical legal animation showing the insertion of the biopsy needle through the chest wall and into the lung tissue with the tip of the needle penetrating into the tumor. There is a tear of the pulmonary vein adjacent to a torn bronchiole. Air flows through the pulmonary vein to the heart. Blood enters the airway and flows into the bronchioles. Air bubbles flow through the left atrium and left ventricle and out through the aorta where they pass into the coronary arteries. Air becomes lodged within the coronary arteries preventing blood flow into these vessels rapidly resulting in a cardiac arrest.
