Arterial Dissection

Arterial Dissection

The cross-section of an artery showing the mechanism of an arterial dissection. The normal artery with a clean and open lumen has 3 intact layers including the tunica intima, media, and adventitia. A small tear in the intima creates a flap that partially obstructs blood flow. This allows for blood to flow up behind the tear, creating a false lumen between the vessel layers.
