Segmental Fractures of the Lower Left Leg with Surgical Fixation

This animation shows the anterior view of segmental fractures of the lower left leg with surgical fixation. Anatomy in this view includes the tibia and fibula with a non-displaced fracture of the proximal tibia, displaced fracture of the tibial shaft, and a displaced fracture of the fibular shaft. Surgical fixation includes creating an incision above the patella and opening to the exposed quadriceps tendon. The quadriceps tendon is then cut and divided in order to insert a trocar behind the patella and down to the tibia. A guidewire is inserted through the cannula down into the upper tibia. The upper tibia is then reamed to allow the insertion of the tibial nail into the intramedullary canal.
