Thermal Injury with Delayed Full Thickness Perforation

In this view, we see the serosa (outside layer) of the rectum damaged with heat from a cautery device. Over the course of the next few days, the anterior rectal wall undergoes cellular changes such as coagulation necrosis and eventually leads to the subsequent condition of a full thickness perforation.
