Umbilical Cord Compression

This animation displays the sagittal view of the uterus of a pregnant woman and the mechanism of an umbilical cord compression. Anatomy highlighted in this view includes the uterus, aorta, uterine artery, uterine vein, pubic symphysis, placenta, umbilical cord, umbilical vein, and umbilical arteries. Normally, blood carries oxygen to the organs and tissues from the mother to the fetus. Yet, when the umbilical cord becomes trapped between the fetal head and the pubic symphysis, the blood flow to the baby is obstructed due to the compression of the umbilical arteries and vein.
